Cybersecurity for small- and medium-sized businesses

2019-03-27T10:42:16-07:00

Has your organization been hit with a data breach or ransomware recently? This happens more often than you might think to businesses of all sizes. Given the frequency, complexity, and increasing number of threats, a multi-level, agile, and cutting-edge cybersecurity strategy is the only response that will protect businesses from massive losses. Fortunately, managed IT services providers (MSPs) are filling this gap with solutions and expertise that even small businesses can afford.

The numbers

According to the Ponemon Institute’s 2018 State of Cybersecurity in Small & Medium Size Businesses (SMBs) survey, cyber attacks on SMBs have increased from 61 percent in 2017 to 67 percent in 2018. Only 28 percent of these SMBs evaluated their ability to mitigate threats, vulnerabilities, and attacks as highly effective. 58 percent of SMBs in the study experienced a data breach in the last year.
Most SMBs in Ponemon’s research said attacks against their companies had severe financial consequences. For instance, the report cited that many of them spent an average of $1.43 million because […]

Useful tweaks for your new MacBook

2019-03-27T10:42:28-07:00

Like other Apple products, MacBooks are notoriously expensive, especially compared to their Windows counterparts. But as legions of personal and business users will tell you, a MacBook is well worth the price. And to make sure you get the most bang for your buck, you need to set it up properly by tweaking these settings.

Check for updates

From time to time, Apple releases updates to macOS. If the tech giant has released a new one since your MacBook was built, you don’t have to miss out on the latest features and patches. You can manually check for updates by clicking the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen and choosing System Preferences. If any updates are available, click on Update Now to install them or More Info to see the details about the updates.

Choose a default browser

Safari is the default browser on Apple devices, and many prefer it over other browsers for several reasons. But if you don’t like Safari, you can easily change your […]

Stretch your laptop’s battery life

2019-03-27T10:36:40-07:00

More people use laptops to do work on the go, making long battery life a major priority. Wouldn’t it be great if you could stretch and optimize the life of your laptop battery? These useful tips will make sure that your laptop’s battery will last longer.

Some truths about your laptop battery

Batteries in many modern devices are lithium-based — either lithium-ion or lithium-polymer — and users must take note of the following guidelines for proper battery maintenance:

  • Leaving your battery completely drained will damage it.
  • Batteries have limited lifespans. So no matter what you do, yours will age from the very first time you charge it. This is because as time passes, the ions will no longer be able to flow efficiently from the anode to the cathode, thereby reducing the battery’s capacity.

What else can degrade your battery

Besides being naturally prone to deterioration, your battery can degrade due to higher-than-normal voltages, which happens when you […]

The cloud is more secure than you think

2019-03-27T10:37:12-07:00

Even to this day, many people doubt the cloud’s security.. However, experts argue that it’s almost always better than that of local area networks (LANs). So whether you’re considering a cloud web server or internet-based productivity software, take a minute to learn why the cloud might just be your best option.

Hands-on management

Unless you have an overinflated budget, relying on local copies of data and software means your IT staff is forced to spread themselves across a bevy of different technologies. For example, one or two in-house tech support employees can’t become experts in one service or solution without sacrificing others. If they focus on just cybersecurity, the quality of hardware maintenance and help desk service are going to take a nosedive.

However, cloud service providers (CSPs) benefit from economies of scale. CSPs maintain tens, sometimes thousands, of servers and hire technicians who specialize in every subset of cloud technology.

Fewer vulnerabilities

Cloud security isn’t superior just because more technicians are watching over servers. When all the facets of your business’s […]

Hints to improve your Google Search experience

2019-03-27T10:37:39-07:00

You know what Google is, but do you understand how to maximize its capabilities? Here are some tips and tricks to draw the most gains out of the most powerful search engine in the world.

Include and exclude keywords

Google will understand most of the search terms you type into it. However, at times the search engine will match only some of the words you typed, showing limited results. To avoid this, just point out which keywords are the most important by adding a plus symbol (+) in front of words you would like Google to include in the search results.

And if the results you’re looking for get pushed off the first page by similar-yet-irrelevant articles, adding a minus symbol (-) in front of keywords you don’t want to see will keep them from showing up. For example, “+virtualization -vSphere” will provide search results about different virtualization services while excluding results related to VMWare’s virtualization product, vSphere.

Additionally, searching a phrase within double quotation marks guarantees to retrieve results that […]

Top ways ERP improves your business

2019-03-27T10:37:53-07:00

The only way for your business to succeed is for it to keep improving. There are many areas you can always refine, like company policy and customer service. One important improvement you should consider, however, is getting enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, and here’s why.

ERP explained

ERP is a program that integrates all your systems into a single database, so if you want to take a look at human resources, accounting, or sales, you only need to access one system instead of three. In practice, this means that everyone, regardless of department, will be able to access the same information. This also means that employees will no longer have to re-enter data onto their department-specific database, because all databases will already have been linked.

Deeper insight

Simplicity isn’t the only merit of an ERP, however. A single database lets you see all information across every branch of your business and gain actionable insights that enable you to make more informed decisions. Financial reporting, for example, benefits a lot […]

5 ways to enhance Android security

2019-03-27T10:38:45-07:00

It’s normal for you to be emotionally attached to your mobile device, which is why you most likely sleep beside it at night. Like with all things important to you, you’ll want to take care of your Android phone. So if you value your personal data or the apps inside your Android device, it’s best to take its security seriously by enabling the following extra features.

Set a strong screen lock

The single most important thing any smartphone owner can do is use a strong, unique passcode or swipe pattern to prevent unwanted access to their device. Avoid using obvious codes such as your birthday or pet’s name; instead, use alphanumeric combinations that are much harder to crack.

To enable a screen lock, simply head over to Settings > Security. Select Screen Lock and pick your preferred password lock type and set Automatic Lock after a certain period of time. From then on, you […]
